  • Writing Battle Update

    May 23rd, 2025

So unfortunately, I’ve gone out without winning a single round in this last Writing Battle. It wasn’t exactly unexpected but hey, one round going my way despite the fact that I didn’t follow the rules would have been nice. Oh well. I’ve got some friends who are still going strong as the competition progresses, and I’m excited to find out who will win this one.

If you haven’t seen my other post linking to the story and would like to read it, here you go.

The reason I lost this time is pretty clear. I got too caught up with a poorly thought out concept and ended up having to pare it back so much that it wasn’t even sci-fi anymore. In the future I guess I’ll just try not to do that. Amazing insight, I know. Sometimes a concept seems so strong until I execute it and find out just how many flaws it really has that its hard to avoid that pitfall. I think the more competitions I do, the less I’ll have the issue, but I’m struggling to come up with a silver bullet to kill this problem. I think I’ll just have to keep writing more. At the end of the day, it is a bit of a numbers game when it comes to competitions like this one, and I want the numbers in my favor. In other words, more competitions!

    Thank you for reading,

    Benjamin Hawley
